February 7 / The Bible – God's Word for You

“Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” John 5:39

“Search the Scriptures.” This is the Word that comes to us from Christ. If it were important for us to search the [church] fathers, Christ would have told us to do so. But the fathers do not all speak the same things. Which of them shall we choose as our guide? We need not trust in uncertainties. We go beyond the fathers to learn of God from His Word. This is eternal life, to know God. Oh, how thankful we should be that the Bible is the inspired Word of God. Holy men of old wrote this Word by the inspiration of the Spirit. God did not leave His Word in the memory of men, but passed it down from generation to generation by oral transmission and traditional revelation. If He had done this, things would have been added to the Word gradually by men. We would be asked to receive that which is not inspired. Let us thank God for the written Word.

The commentaries that have been written about the Word do not all agree. Often they conflict with each other. God does not ask us to be led by them. It is His Word that we are dealing with. Everyone can study this Word for themselves. And they may know that the lessons of this Word are unchangeable. The opinions of men differ, but the Bible always says the same thing. The Word of God is from everlasting to everlasting.

The Bible is not given only to ministers or learned men. Every man, woman, and child should read the Scriptures for himself. Do not depend upon the minister to read it for you. The Bible is God's Word to you. The poor man needs it as much as the rich man, the unlearned as much as the learned. And Christ has made His Word so plain that by reading it no one need stumble. Let the humble teacher read and understand the Word given by the wisest Teacher the world has ever known, and among kings, governors, statesmen, and the world's most exalted men, there is none greater than He. …

To search means to seek for that which was lost. Search for yourself for the hidden treasures. Do not leave this work to ministers. You cannot afford to be ignorant of the Word of God. Study the difficult passages, compare verse with verse, and you will find that the Scripture is the key that unlocks the Scriptures.
