This pamphlet is a compilation of several articles written by Ellen G. White's contemporaries about her. They were convinced that she was a true messenger of God. Ellen G. White was recognized as such by those who accepted her message and by those who rejected her message. Everyone was convinced that she was a messenger of God. Where did they get this conviction?
"The Spirit beareth witness with our spirit..." (Rom.8:16). This shows that it is God's Spirit who convinces both the believer and the unbeliever of the truth. However, this does not mean that everyone accepts this truth.
“And when He (the Holy Spirit) is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment” (John 16:8).
"For they show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts between themselves accusing or else excusing themselves, in the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Christ Jesus according to my gospel" (Rom.2:15,16).

We see this also in Samuel. He was acknowledged as a prophet by all Israel, from Dan to Beersheba (1 Sam. 3:20). Where did all Israel get this conviction?
Also, both the disciples and the Pharisees and scribes were convinced that Jesus was a true prophet.
“Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God” (John 3:2).
"Then Jesus cried out as he taught in the temple, and said, Ye know me, and whence I am" (John 7:28).
Where does this conviction come from? This conviction is more than just 'believing' - it is having a 'conviction' that this messenger is from God. 'The Spirit bears witness with the spirit of each man that this messenger is from God.' That is what we see in the gospels and in the Old Testament.
In some books you can read how to distinguish a true prophet or prophetess from a false one. A number of tests are given. Do these tests help you to convince yourself of the truth? No, but the tests help you to see the difference between the true and the false. These tests taken by themselves do not convince anyone of the truth. Are they necessary? Yes.
Truth cannot be tested to be believed.

A test can only show that it is true, but that does not give you faith. You get this by simply accepting the truth. So it is with the Word of God, so it is with what the prophets have spoken and so it is with the Spirit of prophecy. Read it yourself. The conviction lies in the word itself.
