Foreword
The world is sick, and wherever people live there is much suffering. In spite of the advances in medical science and technology, illness and suffering are increasing rapidly. Degenerative and malignant diseases take their heavy toll, and much lesser complaints undermine the physical constitution and exhaust the strength. Everywhere people seek relief.
It is not the Creator's intention that man should be burdened with pain, that his activities should be curtailed by disease, that his strength should languish and his life should be shortened. But too often the laws of God which govern life are grossly violated; sin enters the heart, and man loses sight of his dependence upon God, the source of life and health. Then come the consequences of the transgression: pain, disease, death.
To understand the laws of nature which govern the body, to bring the habits of life into harmony with them, is a duty of the highest importance. There is a need for a correct understanding of the many factors which contribute to true happiness: a home full of joy, obedience to the laws of life, good relations with one's fellow men.
When illness comes, it is a first necessity that we employ those resources which, in conjunction with the efforts of nature, will build up the body and restore health. Then there is the even more important question of relationship with the Creator, Who in the beginning gave life to man, Who made every provision for lasting happiness, and Who is still interested in the welfare of man today.
In this book the author, a woman of vast experience in the practical affairs of life, specially favored with rare insight and knowledge, has placed within the reach of every father and mother, every man and woman, every professional and layman, an enormous amount of information about life and its laws, about health and its requirements, about disease and its remedies, about diseases of the soul and the healing balm of Gilead.
The book is written in a clear, simple, and beautiful language, instructive to the student, hopeful to the despairing, encouraging to the sick, and soothing to the weary. For decades it has carried its salutary message to hundreds of thousands, having been published in many countries and reprinted in the most common languages of the world.
That this work, which points the right way, showing us a simpler, more pleasant life, full of joy and happiness, a life with room for the saying that "it is better to give than to receive", may fully fulfill its mission, is the sincere wish of the publishersThe Trustees of the Ellen G.
