 In this age of progress and development, when almost all scientific treatises quickly become outdated, one would be inclined to think that a book like this, written towards the end of the last century, would have been long out of date.
 Nothing could be further from the truth. If there is one book in the field of education and character formation that has lasting value, it is the excellent book by Mrs. White "Education", which appears in the Dutch language under the title "Karaktervorming". It would not be wise to regard this standard work as old-fashioned because it appeared a few decades ago. Why not?
 The answer is simple: Because the principles underlying education and character formation, which are masterfully presented in this book, are still in force. The eternal laws on which a happy family, a healthy society and a radiant religion are based, are not bent or nullified by the concept of time. On the contrary, the further the history of mankind progresses, the more clearly they become noticeable. Yes, like a gigantic building, the outlines of which are only vaguely visible in the mist of time, but which in the light of today presents itself to us in all its glory and proportions, they make themselves known today. Blessed are those who direct their lives according to these standards! It will not escape the attentive reader that various expressions and examples have been given according to customs from the previous century. The core, the truth that is at stake, however, always remains the same. The author also cast her gaze over the entire world. It follows that, albeit sporadically, some of the conditions described in the book are not or only partially applicable to our country today.
 In summary, it can be said that for all who strive for a higher goal and regard education here on earth as preparation for higher education hereafter, the book "Character Formation" will prove to be of inestimable value.
 That this book may give to all who read it the light and blessing which it aims at, is the wish of the publishers.
